Supreme Court Justices Call For Project-based Legal Services

Posted by John E Grant on January 2, 2010

At Imua Legal Advisors, we understand that people need to control their legal expenses in ways that give them the best possible value for your legal dollar. That's why we introduced project pricing and embrace an education-based approach. We believe our methods stand on their own by offering our clients a superior value. Still, we were happy to see a tacit approval of our model from two of the nation's leading judges.

In an op-ed piece in today's New York Times, the Chief Justices of California and New Hampshire lamented the soaring costs of legal representation. Under the headline A Nation of Do-it-Yourself Lawyers, the justices write that rising legal fees have forced a growing number of people and businesses to quit using lawyers altogether, instead doing what they can to navigate the convoluted legal system on their own.

One solution the justices recommend is broader use of "unbundled legal services," where a client hires a lawyer to handle certain parts of a particular matter but takes care of other parts on his or her own. Specifically, the justices said, "We need members of the legal profession to join with us . . . in meeting this challenge by making unbundled legal services and other innovative solutions . . . work for all who need them."

We wholeheartedly endorse this strategy because, of course, "unbundled legal services" is simply another term for our project-based approach. Not only do we agree with the justices that lawyers must find ways to make legal services affordable, we are committed to doing so.
